The Portal: Cosmic Rock Opera

Hello San Francisco!

A number of longtime burners have created The Portal - Cosmic Rock Opera
Our creative director has been at the last 12 consecutive burns! We're from Boulder, Colorado.

The Portal will show this Friday and Saturday nights - April 5 and 6. Show runs from 8 pm to about 1 am at SOMArts in San Francisco.

We'd love to get the Burning Man community to the show, which has been very much inspired by Burning Man itself, as well as Kahlil Gibran's 'The Prophet' and The Hero's Journey as described by Joseph Campbell.

"The Portal weaves together live-music, cinematography, lighting and performance to create an epic, mythological journey into the heart of humanity. Epic rock, infused with tribal and body-shaking beats, takes the audience on a visual journey through the desert and mountains--and through fractal fire, water and love."

You can hear the music here: http://www.facebook.com/portalmystery?sk=app_2405167945
and the trailer is on our homepage: http://portalconcert.com/

Much Love,
Julia + The Portal

ART & POLITICS: A fundraiser for Truth and Beauty and Alix Rosenthal

Friday, April 6th
7:00pm until 12:00am
Buy tickets here: http://artandpolitics.eventbrite.com/

Do you know the truth about what makes a woman beautiful?

There are many words that could be used to describe it, like strength, confidence, intelligence...but those don't begin to describe true beauty. Its an energy women exude, its the spirit they embody.

Truth is Beauty is the next monumental sculpture by Marco Cochrane that captures all that is beautiful in a woman. Alix Rosenthal is running for re-election to the San Francisco Democratic County Central Committee in June 2012.

Please join us for a fabulous night of fundraising for the completion of Truth is Beauty, and the re-election of Alix Rosenthal.
Click here to purchase advance tickets: http://artandpolitics.eventbrite.com/
A limited number tickets will be available at the door.

The night will feature:
Live sculpting by Marco Cochrane of model Alix Rosenthal. All funds raised will be divided, with half going toward the completion of Truth is Beauty and half towards Alix's re-election campaign.

An event like this would only be complete with some booty shaking courtesy of:
Zach Moore (Space Cowboys)
Tamo (Space Cowboys)
JoeJoe (Brass Tax & Bliss Dance Crew)
Ding Dong (Brass Tax)

Doors at 7 pm
Live Sculpting Begins at 7:30 pm

DOG AND PONY SHOW at NIMBY

ANUBIS Kickoff at NIMBY.... A NIMBY Night of Burning Man Presentations
Saturday, April 7th, 8pm
Film Screening 9:30
NIMBY
8410 Amelia Street
Oakland, CA 94621

This is a fundraiser and we are suggesting a $10 donation at the door. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.

ANUBIS, the stunning 50-foot high Egyptian Jackal project for this year's Burn. Anubis will most certainly be "the" hot art piece on the playa this year. This is your chance to join the Anubis Team, get insider info, purchase some cool one of a kind swag, and meet the artists, architects and builders.

Remember the Trojan Horse from Burning Man 2012? We are showing a great documentary, The Black Rock Horse, for the first (and probably) only time to the general public in the Bay Area. Come hear the film's Director Todd Darling talk about the inspiration behind the project, how the Trojan Horse almost didn't get built, the construction challenges, and how the darn thing almost ran away one day!

The primary build team from the Trojan Horse project, Dan Fox, Dan Swain, and others will be on hand to share their stories and answer questions.

And if you are new to the area, new to Burning Man or just simply new, NIMBY is a great place to meet up with other folks. Lots of art projects are created and built at NIMBY along with many special events and fundraisers. There is plenty of street parking and easy access to freeway. Near to the Coliseum BART Station.

But wait, we've got lots of other things happening that night!
Entertainment Provided:

DJ Miss Iggy and Crew - Video Provided by Phoenix
Todd Darling's movie "The Black Rock Horse"
Aerialists Tracy Miller and Elizabeth Silverman
Fire Hooping - Fire Performers and more!

Unique not available anywhere else SWAG - No host libations available

The Funky Ones present...
it's nice actually! i can dress myself premier CD release party
Spring Fling Formal

Saturday, April 7th, 2012

The Blue Macaw
2565 Mission st.
San Francisco, CA 94110
9pm-2am
$10
www.icandressmyselfmusic.com

Absurd-dance-band i can dress myself, known for their blend of electroacoustic-funk, nerdcore rapping, flailing dance parties and abrupt costume changes is unleashing their debut album, it’s nice actually, at the Blue Macaw in the Mission on Saturday, April 7th.

Come out of your winter hibernation and dress for visual stimulation and spring awakening: ruffled shirts, skirts, & bright-and-light colors just in time for Easter.

Frolic through a BOTTLECAP GARDEN OF WONDER and get wiggly to the best adult-sized children’s music SF has to offer.

Doors open at 9pm; face-melting performance by i can dress myself at 11:30 with DJ sets before and after by a giant NeonBunny and the deeply digable Dex Stakker.

Entry: $10
CD: $5 (this night only)

About the Band:

i can dress myself is a fresh-funk, electroacoustic, silly dance band selling psychedelic experiences for adult children. Born in 2009 in San Francisco, these big kids graduated from the legendary bed stage of Castle McLeodister to performing atop their own Grahama’s House as part of Elephant Bird Camp and the Funky Ones.

Graham McLeod, founder of the Funky Ones and Head Graham of all time makes meaty beats while freestyling and giving his bongos a good whupping. Sweet, pink-haired Thundermouse (Emily Haltom), a classically trained violinist, wrings a juicy roar out of her tiny Korg and croons and pops or shreds and rocks. The self-proclaimed Minister of Purpleganda (Eamon Armstrong) completes the trio with a powerful baritone harden in the tough corridors of Western Australia’s youth musical theater scene. They are joined by their newest creation: the I Can Dance Commanders: three luscious, Technicolor creatures fashioned out of a scaly petri dish at Burnal Equinox 2012. i can dress myself guarantees “We will have you laughing while dancing or we’ll return your face free of charge!” And special thanks to Paul.

OakTown Hall is about filling a need in West Oakland...to provide a place and an organization which will provide opportunities to localize the emerging power of our visionary community from the ground up. There is a world of possibilities here at American Steel Studios and this warehouse district that is capable of building and creating new businesses, projects roles and opportunities. OakTown Hall will be the place where you can come to seek the support and the infrastructure necessary to coordinate these opportunities, through cooperation and localized participation.

To achieve this, we need your support. The goal is to raise the funding to finalize our basic infrastructure and build the organization that will help to facilitate the goals and needs of our community. We will host events and build programs that seek to bring opportunities for experience in the arts and self-reliant innovation, education, mentorship and participation in coordination with Burners Without Borders and other local leaders and organizations. We see a great deal of need around us and an even stronger desire to share and to give. OakTown Hall will be the crossroads for all of these talents and energies to intersect and shape new opportunities in West Oakland, the Bay Area and beyond.

Please come out and support!!

Burning Man/Earth Guardians LNT Train the Trainer Camping Event
April 28-29, 2012, Davenport, CA

On April 28-29 Earth Guardians will host our annual Leave No Trace (LNT) camping trip. If you are interested in learning more about why Burning Man is the largest LNT event in the world and how you can help contribute by teaching LNT, this is the trip for you. We will also discuss ways to green Burning Man with past participants who come each year to reconnect and reinvigorate.

If you come, you will become a certified LNT trainer, meet other active Burners, visit the beautiful California coastline and have FUN at the same time. There is no charge for this training - it is sponsored by Burning Man.

The trip involves traveling just north of Santa Cruz and “camping” at a private home in the country. We will conduct the class outdoors. Each of you will be teaching a principle of LNT with an emphasis on how it pertains to Burning Man and the desert environment.

Please sign up for the course only when you are sure you will attend. This will help us coordinate the assignments given to the participants for the seven principles of LNT.

On completion of this class you will receive a certificate as a LNT trainer from the National LNT organization. Your mission, upon completion, will be to teach your fellow residents of Black Rock City how to Leave No Trace and Green Their Burn as well as spreading LNT ethics throughout your community and beyond.
Registration will close on March 31th. If you are interested, send an email to: lnt@burningman.com
